Fifty years ago America was engaged on two battlefronts - the fight over there, on the other side of the planet, and the one at home. LIFE chronicled both emcounters and now, a half century after the first official ground forces landed in Vietnam, it does so again in this book.
Con Thien, My Lai and Saigon.
Berkeley, Kent State and Chicago.
Searing, painful memories - essential parts of our American story, from wich we are stil learning. Here, in archival and original reporting, including never-before-seen photography, LIFE remembers the Vietnam wars : the most dramatic conflicts of our contemporary history.
What do we remember of those battles ? Reminders are in the pages of this book : an exotic, beautiful land of rice paddies and forests serving as a hellish theater of war; westerners bringing their western ways to an eastern land thei didn't understand; terrible instances when innocent children were caught in the crossfire; fallen protesters; a White House besieged; bravery and comradeship in the field; napalm fire, confusion - constant confusion.
Bob Schieffer was there, a young reporter for his Texas newspaper, and he brings us back to the time in his foreword. He went in a hawk but quickly felt that any good end might be unattainable. LIFE's photographers - David Douglas Duncan, Robert Capa, Carl Mydans, John Dominis, Paul Schutzer, Co Rentmeester, John Olson, Howard Sochurek, Joe Scherschel and most particulary Larry Burrows - went in as well. Two of them - Capa and Burrows - would be killed in Indochina. The work in these pages is their testament. All of the other famous, difficult pictures are here as well, including the Vietcong execution recorded by Eddie Adams and the girl burned by napalm who was seen by Nick Ut. Updates on those stories and many others are given too.
The last in a distinguished line of LIFE staff photographers was Joe McNally, and in our final chapter he is back at work for us, traveling the country to assemble a portfolio of thoughts and images - veteran, activists, dissidents all represented. Fifty years ago, these Marines, soldiers, and protesters were engaged in the Vietnam wars. They remain to tell the tale in the pages of this essential book.
